Like so many other drag racers, Travis
actually started racing motocross. Once the appeal of getting banged
up every week wore off, the Davis clan had to find another outlet
for their need for speed. Living in a hotbed of 1/8th mile racing
made the dragstrip a natural place to play. In 1998, Travis jumped
on a Pro ET bike, but after five outings he knew that he needed
something faster. In a rather unusual move, the Davis team built
a Timblin framed, gas, nitrous, turbo funny bike. The bike saw plenty
of action on the short southern tracks with some participation at
AMA/Prostar events. In 1999, the Davis team ran a partial AMA/Prostar
schedule and a full SEMDRA Pro Unlimited schedule. They finished
the season in the top four in SEMDRA competition.
As the 2000 SEMDRA season wound down,
the Davis team was again in the top four in points. After having
run the Timblin chassis for two years getting valuable testing time
and experience, a new bike was being readied. The team
introduced their new Koenig Lowboy at the 2000 AMA/Prostar World
Finals in Gainesville. During the 2001 season, the bugs were worked
out and the Davis Racing team found themselves in the #2 spot in
SEMDRA points. As the only
turbo bike in the field they were quite satisfied.
Not resting on their laurels, though,
2002 saw them running more and more AMA/Prostar events to go along
with the full schedule of SEMDRA races. Once again at the AMA/Prostar
World Finals in Gainesville (just down the road a couple of hours
from Davis Racing) the team made personal history. At that race
they went to their first final round where they faced National #1
Tom Perry. Perry won the race but Travis and family got a taste
of winning rounds and they sure did like it.
That taste has carried over to the
2003 season. In this, their first full season in AMA/Prostar competition,
they already have 3 wins (Richmond, Norwalk and Indy) and 2 runner-ups
(St. Louis and Atlanta) in the first five completed races of the
season. The Davis clan is looking to keep their final round string
intact, which will guarantee them a Funny Bike National #1 ranking
for the year.
